About Us

We are a small NYC-based 501(c)(3) non-profit all-volunteer cat rescue organization with no physical shelter.

Our History

City Critters, Inc. is a small all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping cats in New York City since 1994. Our founders and original team of volunteers met while individually doing what we could to assist stray cats. We were teachers, nurses, paralegals, court reporters, office workers, graphic artists, etc, and cared for cats and kittens on our own time using our own funds. It became clear we needed to get organized and seek out serious sources of support.

The 90s were exciting as New York joined the “no-kill” movement. One month after forming, we took on a 60-cat trap-neuter-return (TNR) project for the Battery Park City Authority. Our next large project involved helping over 100 cats living in a hoarding situation. This brought us into the East Village, and to this day, we prioritize resources around that “cone of focus” from Chinatown to Stuyvesant Town.

City Critters volunteers and partners work tirelessly to better the lives of the stray and abandoned cats of NYC and we are proud of what we have accomplished, yet, there is still an overwhelming need for more.

The relentless calls for help persist, and City Critters will continue to respond to the best of our ability, just as we’ve done since 1994.

Our NY State registered rescue organization ID is RR088.

Our Commitment

We focus on cats and we try to meet the challenges they present. Whether they are elderly, injured or ill; shy, friendly, or feral, we aim to provide the care that is needed. All of the cats are spayed or neutered. Ferals are returned into areas where they have access to essentials but most of the cats we rescue end up being pampered and loved by our wonderful adopters.
